LSBU has retained second place overall for the past three years as one of the leading higher education apprenticeship providers in England according to apprenticeship provider data collated by the Department for Education.

LSBU is also taking part in a virtual ‘Ask the Apprentice’ Panel on 9 February, hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Apprenticeships. The event provides parliamentarians with an opportunity to meet and speak directly with apprentices, while also learning more about apprenticeship delivery in England.

The University is expanding its apprenticeship offering further this year. South Bank Colleges, part of the LSBU Group of local educational institutions, will offer apprenticeships in engineering and healthcare, from September 2021. These apprenticeships will focus on delivering levels 2 and 3 to young applicants. As the sponsor University, LSBU’s role will be to ensure these apprenticeships are high quality and meet the needs of both employers and apprentices;

LSBU currently offers a variety of apprenticeships with employer sponsors, across a range of sectors – from building services, engineering and chartered planning to nursing, screen skills, rail engineering, technical acoustics and digital marketing.

The University’s top six apprenticeship categories in 2020 were:

Surveying (Building and Quantity Surveying) – 543 apprentices;

Health and Social Care – 484 apprentices (including 200 Nursing Associates);

Building Services- 314 apprentices;

Planning- 139 apprentices;

Architecture – 116 apprentices;

Digital Marketing – 49 apprentices.

In 2020 LSBU introduced six construction standards at levels 4 and 6. LSBU became the first English university to launch levels 5 and 6 apprenticeships in Rail and Rail Systems Engineering, working with employers such as Network Rail, Transport for London, WSP and Siemens.

Lauren Smithers, 22 years old, currently a second-year (BA) Digital Marketing trainee in LSBU’s Business School, on a Digital Marketer apprenticeship with Pearson Plc, said: “I was searching for jobs online and came across an apprenticeship. Once I started to look into it further, I knew it was the route for me as I struggled with being in education full-time.

“I needed more hands-on experience, as I tend to learn best while doing something practical. I applied for the job online, then had a phone and face to face interview with a recruitment company, before an assessment day with the hiring company.

“During the lockdown, LSBU made themselves available to help out at all hours, which has been fantastic for me due to an increased workload. They work really closely with my employer to make sure I have everything I need to complete this apprenticeship successfully.”

Sammy Shummo, Group Director of Apprenticeships at LSBU, said: “In spite of immense challenges posed to UK employers by the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit, LSBU has succeeded in holding onto a position in the top three higher education apprenticeship providers in England. The University is also on track to have over 2000 apprentices enrolled by early 2021.

“As LSBU Group embarks on its strategy for next year we look forward to working with employers, local communities and stakeholders to have 10,000 apprentices enrolled with the Group by 2025.

“LSBU is proud to be supporting apprentices from all backgrounds with over half identifying as BAME, 11% having declared a disability and around 10% from the most deprived parts of the country.”

“Our apprentices distinguished themselves last year by winning numerous awards in the fields of Civil Engineering, Construction and Architecture.”

During the half-term break, children will get involved in the campaign’s creative, developing their very own avatars using code. These avatars will then be lit up on a Piccadilly Circus billboard.

Last week, BT launched its brand campaign ‘Beyond Limits’ that reveals the company’s ambition to help families and communities across the UK, and companies in Britain and around the world. The new campaign reflects the changing nature of BT and its focus on improving connectivity, setting a new standard for customer experience and providing essential skills training for 10 million people and businesses.

Angela Noronha, Head of School at St Joseph’s, said: “Collaborating with BT to produce this creative display of digital coding has been exhilarating for the teachers and children involved,” said “As a five year sponsor of our computing initiative, BT has been integral in expanding the programme and it is now ingrained in 60% of UK primary schools. Our future will continue to rely more and more on digital skills and participating in this exciting event will inspire children, fuelling their imaginations as well as developing their critical digital technology skills.”

Marc Allera, CEO of Consumer division at BT, said: “The ‘Beyond Limits’ campaign represents a real shift for BT, inside and out. Our presence and scale across the UK means that we have an opportunity and responsibility to go further than ever to connect more people and businesses across the UK, help them make the most out of the technology they have, and equip them with the skills they need to shape the future. This campaign represents just that, a bold step into the future, helping people to break down barriers and realise their potential.”

TV campaign

BT further launched a TV ad developed for the campaign, which captures hope in a time of uncertainty for Britain. It pays homage to Charles Dickens’s classic novel, The Tale Of Two Cities, following the story of a young girl as she travels through modern Britain to reach her classroom of the future.

The TV campaign builds in partnership with ITV where BT unveil the new logo and feature interpretations of it created by children from the Ashmount and Pontlliw Primary School from London and Swansea using coding robots.

A launch event

Last week the campaign was launched an event at Wembley Arena, headlined by pop-singer Jess Glynne and hosted by TV presenter Tess Daly. BT, with students from St. Joseph’s School in Islington created a choreographed drone performance, featuring 160 drones synchronized to a medley of Glynne’s greatest hits. The performance was a celebration of BT’s new brand direction as well as its commitment to its ‘Skills for Tomorrow’ initiative, a new online and community training programme designed to provide essential digital skills training for 10 million school children, families and businesses across the UK.

Led by Saatchi & Saatchi London, supported by other Publicis Groupe agencies as well as AnalogFolk and PosterScope and a wide roster of agencies across all disciplines. “Beyond Limits” will also feature digital and social advertising, significant PR and internal communications campaigns to communicate this new frontier for BT to its global workforce, an experiential OOH activation and launch event.

The touring pop-up initiative, created and delivered by global brand experience agency Sense, aims to educate students on the environmental benefits of plant-based foods by offering a tasty, planet-friendly twist on classic student dishes such as tacos, kebabs and curry.

The planet is in crisis – from climate change to ocean pollution and deforestation, but what is often overlooked is that food is actually at the heart of many of these issues, responsible for almost 60% of global biodiversity loss

Beth Nicholas, Account Director at Sense, says: “The Finer Diner’s menu tempts students with free samples of their favourites, which when ordered are revealed to be completely meat-free. We wanted to show students that they can still enjoy the food they love and do their bit for the planet, without compromising on taste.”

Nick Hughes, Food Sustainability Adviser at WWF, said: “Our aim is to encourage students to explore plant-based foods and help them make the connection between what they put on their plates and its impact on the planet. Young people represent the future of our society, and we feel that encouraging them to make the switch could have a major influence in the fight for our world.”

The Sodexo / WWF Finer Diner campaign will run until 25th October visiting Solent University, Coventry University, York St John University and Trinity College Dublin. Students at these universities will be able to sample 100% plant-based dishes, which will then become part of the menus at all Sodexo-run university restaurants.

Over 20,000 schools will be taking part in the project through the environmental charity’s Eco Schools programme. Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 67 countries, making it the largest educational programme in the world.

The Eco-Schools programme is pupil-led, involving hands-on learning that gets the whole school and the wider community involved in exciting environmental projects.

Schools are provided with free resources to help them progress to the international Eco-Schools Green Flag award within 12 months of registration and Keep Britain Tidy provides additional assistance from a dedicated team of former teachers.

The initiative is being supported by Keep Britain Tidy recycling partner Harrogate Water along with Plastipak, one of the global leaders in sustainable packaging and recycling.

Richard McIlwain, Deputy Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “We are currently working with Harrogate Water and Plastipak on the new Waste and Recycling module. In 2019 ‘The Challenge’ will be a call to action for all participating schools to take part in a national survey assessing recycling in schools, finding out what waste management resources they have available as well as understanding local authority collections and recycling services. This National survey will be the first if its kind and will allow the schools to help advise on what they believe we should be doing to improve provision and help harmonise recycling services in schools across the country. The report will be published in an easy-to-use infographic format, made available to all relevant parties. This work by students will provide the springboard for the ‘Circular School 2020 Challenge’ when we’ll be encouraging schools to take an active role in coming up with sustainable waste management solutions.”

Kinza Sutton, Head of Public Affairs and Sustainability Europe at Plastipak’s, said: “Plastipak and Harrogate Water are champions of the circular economy and we believe children can play a big part in shaping a sustainable future and challenging the misinformation and confusion around waste management and recycling.”

Nicky Cain Brand Manager at Harrogate Water, said: “The Eco-Schools project will promote discussion around waste, recycling and the circular economy in the classroom. We know that children are passionate about the environment and want to lead the way in making positive changes. This programme gives them the opportunity, not only to uncover the facts about packaging and recycling but to influence the way forward towards a more sustainable future.”

As part of the project, Harrogate Water and Plastipak will adding their expertise in recycling and recyclable packaging and producing a video showing the lifecycle of a bottle of Harrogate Spring. All content for the module will be approved by the Assessments and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) and feed into academic subjects, as well as linking into Global Citizenship as part of the National Curriculum.

All PET bottles of Harrogate Spring are 100 per cent recyclable and contain at least 50 per cent recycled content, processed and supplied by Plastipak. The recycled content is sourced solely from the UK to inform consumers that their bottle may return as a new bottle when it is recycled.

Research commissioned by Over half of British children (59%) would choose being read a story by their parents over an extra 30 minutes screen time, according to a new study into family reading habits released today.

The research was commissioned by easyJet to mark the launch of a European-wide initiative to make it easy for parents and children to make reading part of their holiday this summer – 300 ‘Flybraries’ hit the runways today stocked with over 60,000 children’s books in seven languages ready for children and parents to pick up, read and then leave behind for the next passenger.

The new study, which polled 2,000 British parents with children aged 6 – 12, reveals that 90% of children enjoy being read aloud to by their mum or dad, with a similar percentage of parents (91%) rating sharing a book with their child as a special time they really enjoy.

Child respondents revealed that they would be happy to swap 30 minutes watching TV or a movie (29%), playing on the Xbox or other gaming device (27%) or going to bed earlier (21%).

The majority of the parents surveyed (80%) revealed that holidays offer an opportunity for more family time, with 64% planning to share stories with their children this summer. Most parents believe that reading, whether fiction or non-fiction, is a good way for their child to understand the world (86%). Meanwhile nine in ten (89%) report that reading books helps fuel their child’s imagination and creativity.

easyJet is teaming up with leading publisher HarperCollins Children’s Books to put books in the passenger seat-pockets of flights departing the UK. The featured titles include; Dinosaur Juniors by Rob Biddulph, Mog and Bunny by Judith Kerr, Paddington Abroad by Michael Bond, The Boy Who Could Do What He Liked by David Baddiel, and Geek Girl by Holly Smale.

Katie Piper and author Rob Biddulph launched easyJet’s Flybraries initiative at London Luton Airport today with a special reading and book signing for young travellers. The airport is hosting a series of in terminal events over the course of the school holidays at a specially designed Flybrary reading area with story time and activities from HarperCollins Children’s Books’ most loved characters, giving passengers the chance to dive into a good book while they wait to board their flight.

Katie Piper, mum to Belle (age 5) and Penelope (age 18 months) said: “Holidays offer the perfect opportunity to make time for sharing stories with your little ones. I love it when Belle and I get stuck into a book together so when easyJet told me they were going to be providing Flybraries on tens of thousands of flights this summer, I was delighted to get involved. I hope that families across Europe will be entertained on board as they get hooked on a book together.”

Tina Milton, Director of Cabin Crew at easyJet, said: “At easyJet, we are passionate about creating family friendly initiatives that make flying with us both fun and also easier for parents. And as the summer holidays provide the perfect opportunity for some well-earned family time, we hope that the millions of passengers who fly with us this summer enjoy sharing a story or two from our unique in-flight lending library.”

Rob Biddulph, author of the Dinosaur Juniors series and official illustrator of the annual World Book Day, said: “Flybraries is such a great idea! I have three daughters, and so I know from experience how excited children get when it’s holiday time. Keeping little ones calm, yet entertained, in a confined space can be really, really tricky. So, to me, it makes total sense to take advantage of the time you have together by sitting quietly and sharing a story. It’s actually a great opportunity for a child to enjoy some quality one-on-one time with a parent without too many distractions.”

Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, said: “Reading books is a great way to widen horizons and set children on the path to a successful future. Parents play an important role in getting their children excited about reading and it’s great to see that over half of British parents plan to share stories with their children this summer. EasyJet’s Flybrary initiative is a fantastic way of helping thousands more children keep up their reading skills during the long break and giving families the chance to enjoy stories on holiday.”

Clare Armstrong, Head of Passenger Services at London Luton Airport’s, said: “We’re right behind this brilliant summer initiative by easyJet and were honoured to welcome Katie Piper to London Luton Airport (LLA) to launch this year’s Flybraries campaign and share a story with some of our younger passengers. There’s nothing like curling up with a good book, and we hope that parents and kids heading off to the many holiday destinations served by easyJet from LLA this summer will enjoy creating some special moments together as they share a story or enjoy some quiet time in one of the airport’s specially designed reading nooks.”

Not only does easyJet’s fleet of Flybraries enable children to read books onboard but when they land they can also download free samples of books at www.easyjet.com/en/flybraries.

The campaign launches today with the roll out of Amazon’s LGBT+ Reading Roadshow, the UK’s first ever UK-wide LGBT+ reading programme.

Designed for secondary schools, the roadshow combines inclusivity workshops with the provision of free books and PinkNews merchandise for schools around the UK.

This element of the programme is fronted by the campaigner and musician Will Young and is presented in association with the LGBT+ educational charity, Just Like Us.

It comes during new legal battles concerning the right to inclusive education and the teaching of LGBT+ equality which led to demonstrations outside a Birmingham primary school. Anti LGBT+ protesters have since been banned by a court injunction from protesting outside the school.

The LGBT+ Reading Roadshow will visit secondary schools neighbouring Amazon’s UK sites around the country, using story-telling, advice and mentoring together with guest speakers and readings from inspirational books about the importance of acceptance.

Participating schools will receive a free Book Box for their libraries containing a selection of books about the importance of LGBT+ inclusion and the experiences of LGBT+ people.

Each box will include PinkNews branded and designed pin badges, part of a new merchandise range that PinkNews is launching on Snapchat and other ecommerce channels later this month.

The campaign was inspired by a new survey commissioned through YouGov which reveals that more than half (58 per cent) of teachers welcome more support from businesses like Amazon and PinkNews in promoting LGBT+ diversity and inclusion in schools to help students build important life and career skills.

Activity culminates with Amazon’s headline sponsorship of the 2019 Pink News Awards which take place this October.

Simon Johnson, UK country manager for Books, Amazon, and executive sponsor of Glamazon, the Amazon LGBT+ employee affinity group, said: “Diversity and inclusion can make everybody stronger – benefiting communities, schools and across society as a whole. So by meeting positive role models, running workshops which tackle the causes of bullying and opening young minds to literature that challenges stereotypes, we hope the LGBT+ Reading Roadshow, run in partnership with Pink News, has a positive impact on students and builds on the existing work of schools. Amazon’s brand and values will be present via our touring Treasure Truck, branded collateral, “Glamazon” employees as role models, all supported by PinkNews content. Activity culminates with our sponsorship of this year’s Pink News Awards, and the campaign complements Amazon Music’s continued role as official music partner for Pride in London this summer.”

Benjamin Cohen, CEO of PinkNews, said:“It’s encouraging to see Amazon go above and beyond in its commitment to diversity and inclusion – not just representing those within the LGBT+ community, but right across society. Taking that positive message directly into schools is a force for good.”

PinkNews has been unveiling nominations for the 2019 Awards during a series of parliamentary receptions in Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London throughout June and July.

Specially trained SeedSowers are providing bar staff with further insights on this more complex alcohol-free alternative.

Seedlip is a non-alcoholic spirit from Lincolnshire based distiller Ben Branson, that finally solves the question of ‘what to drink when you’re not drinking’. Hel’s Angels have provided a team of expertly trained ‘SeedSowers’ who are educating bar tenders and restaurant staff on the complexities of the brand and how to create the perfect serve.

A typical training sessions takes participants through a journey, from the background of the brand, through to the meaning behind the label artwork and the number of each bottle. Seedlip are investing in training of this kind to help bartenders to understand how to talk about the drink and serve it, giving consumers an informed choice.

A focus for the training session is the process of distillation. It is important that staff understand how it is made because one of the most common consumer questions is “how can there be no alcohol in it?”.

Helen Hanson, Founder of Hel’s Angels, says: “This is the type of activation which Hel’s Angels is uniquely placed to offer, as it is all about training our Angels to deliver an in-depth engaging experience which benefits the brand, the barstaff and the consumer.”

To date 40 accounts have been visited, with the Seedlip SeedSowers training 159 staff.

This will be followed by the opening of Clicks and Mortar pop-up shops in Wales, Scotland, the Midlands, Yorkshire and across the South East.

The Clicks and Mortar pop-up shops will provide customers the opportunity to discover and buy directly from over 100 small businesses – everything from home ware and health and beauty products to food and drink and electronics. The up-and-coming brands have all built successful online businesses and now want to explore physical retail for the first time.

Emma Jones MBE, Founder of Enterprise Nation, said: “UK shoppers like to shop both online and in high street stores, and our intention is to help small businesses succeed by combining the best elements of online and high street retail,” , which supports over 90,000 of Britain’s small businesses. “This new concept will provide small businesses with the space, technology and support to experience physical retail for the first time, while enabling customers to discover new brands on their local high streets.

Doug Gurr, UK Country Manager at Amazon, said: “Small businesses are one of our most important customer groups, and we’re thrilled to work with Enterprise Nation to design a comprehensive package to help entrepreneurs across the UK grow their businesses, both in-store and online. From giving up-and-coming online, British brands have the chance to experience physical retail, to funding the training of full-time apprenticeships and helping to increase SME exports. Amazon is committed to supporting the growth of small businesses – helping them boost the economy and create jobs across the UK.”

Amazon Apprenticeships
Amazon announced a new £1m Apprenticeship Fund to help small or medium-sized business (SME) selling on Amazon upskill their workforce through their own dedicated apprentices. The new investment will help create over 150 digital marketing, business administration and customer service practitioner apprentices who will work full time for SMEs selling on Amazon, to help boost their productivity, sales and exports in the digital age. Amazon will also provide specialist training on how to build a successful e-commerce business, how participating SMEs can market and advertise their products to customers and how to sell their products to a global customer base. The fund is exclusively open to any brand-owning SME registered in England that currently sells on Amazon and has a turnover of less than £1 million.

Amazon Academies
Yesterday also saw the launch of the 2019 Amazon Academy programme – a series of free events across the UK to provide hands-on, practical training to help small businesses succeed in the digital economy, in particular by growing their export sales. The first event in 2019 is taking place at Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Manchester, and will include training sessions from Amazon teams along with independent business, marketing and intellectual property experts.

BEFORE

When I started, I was given the opportunity to develop my promotional marketing skills by starting the IPM Diploma, have a read of my blog to see what I got up to on my first day.

The idea of the course is to give me a deeper understanding of what makes shoppers tick, and how I can promote my client in the best way possible. I’ll be studying modules like Buyer Behaviour and Consumer Insight as well as Client Account management, so it’s a pretty well rounded curriculum.
Turns out I’ve not seen the end of essays after graduating from uni after all. There’s a 4,500 word assignment for each unit but it’s split into different tasks like presentations, reports and set briefs and so will challenge me on a whole load of things.

What was the induction day all about?

After coffee and introductions with the other candidates, the day started off with an outline of the course and breakdown of the units. Throughout the day we had a range of workshops and tasks that got us thinking about the development of the marketing mix and new ways to communicate with shoppers.

Why am I excited to do this?

I’m excited to be launching a career in Shopper Marketing and so this seems like a good first stepping stone in building a foundation for my future. Having studied marketing at university, the diploma will allow me take the theory I’ve learnt and apply it to working practice. I’m pretty new to Shopper Marketing and so the course will help me truly understand what it’s all about. Also, the diploma is a professional qualification and is recognised across the industry and so it makes perfect sense to be part of it!

What do I want to learn on the diploma?

Everything! I’m looking forward to building up knowledge through the different modules. In particular, I think the Buyer Behaviour module will be really interesting as this covers consumer attitudes, preferences and intentions around making a purchase – pretty useful as a Shopper marketer! I’m excited to learn more about communicating throughout the shopper journey and also how to add value to further drive sales.

What am I excited to get from it?

I think the IPM Diploma is going to be a totally unique experience and I’m really looking forward to becoming professionally qualified in promotional marketing and applying my learnings throughout my career. I’m hoping that I’ll finish the course with lots of knowledge and a new approach to marketing techniques that I wouldn’t have considered before. But most of all… I’m excited to try and beat my team’s previous grades!

AFTER

Hoorah! After a year of hard work and a celebratory ceremony at the House of Commons last week, I can officially say I’m an IPM Diploma graduate!

I started the course in March 2018, studying lots of different areas across 3 units. These included modules ranging from insight & strategic effectiveness to promotional mechanics & techniques to legal & compliance. We also looked at client account management & undertook a brief masterclass.

The course was delivered in 3 study blocks of 2 training days for each unit, with industry experts teaching us the content for each module. Across the 3 units I delivered 3 written assignments, including a response to a set ‘client’ brief, overall writing 14,300 words… that’s longer than my dissertation! My colleagues were a great help during my assignment periods, offering support and guidance throughout.

As a recognised qualification within the industry and having only started my career in Shopper Marketing at the end of 2017 as a fresh university graduate, the diploma was a great introduction into the world of promotional marketing and has taught me some valuable lessons, including the all-important difference between a promotion and a competition!

The ceremony took place at the House of Commons, where we had prosecco and canapés throughout the evening (my favourite combo), the IPM President and Chairman were both there to give us speeches and award us with our certificate.

The IPM Diploma was a fantastic opportunity given to me, although challenging at times, it has been a great experience and I’m pleased to have achieved a Credit.
