Created by Mother and introduced as part of the launch of IKEA Greenwich, the ‘Good Ship IKEA’ has been modelled to look like the retailer’s best-selling bath toy, SMÅKRYP.

The two boats are currently in action at Deptford Creek, south east London. Each one uses cutting-edge ‘Orca’ technology developed in China, which allows them to collect up to 20kgs of rubbish at one time. Founded in 2017, ‘Orca’ is an unmanned environmental protection boat, which has been equipped with rubbish clearing capabilities. Measuring nearly three metres in length and weighing up to 70kgs, the boats are highly durable and anti-corrosive, making them as effective as possible in clearing rubbish and debris from water.

IKEA is partnering with Creekside Education Trust in Deptford on the Good Ship IKEA project to provide a half-term educational experience for local families. As part of the initiative, the public is being invited down to ‘captain’ the boats remotely and the rubbish collected will be upcycled into a unique sculpture that will take pride of place at the newly opened IKEA Greenwich store.

In London alone, 300 tonnes of rubbish are cleared from the Thames every year. Various types of rubbish enter the waterways around Deptford and Greenwich every year and the most commonly found items are water bottles, crisp packets and footballs.

IKEA Greenwich is committed to having a positive impact on the local community, and following the half-term activity, the Good Ship IKEA boats will be permanently donated to the sustainability charity, Hubbub, as part of its ongoing programme to educate people on plastic pollution in our waterways.

Helen Aylett, IKEA Greenwich Store Manager, said: “IKEA is committed to playing a key role in the community and the Good Ship IKEA is just one of many ways we are demonstrating this. In partnership with Creekside Education Trust and Hubbub, we are taking on the important issue of plastic pollution with a playful activity and encouraging children and families to join us in cleaning up the local area.”

Jill Goddard, Chair of Creekside Education Trust said: “We have over 7,000 local school children and their families visiting us every year and we are primed to educate them on plastic usage, the harm it causes our local wildlife and how it ends up in Deptford Creek, the Thames and eventually the ocean. We are delighted to be teaming up with IKEA on delivering a fun but educational activity for the local community during half-term. So much plastic rubbish comes through the river water course and we strongly believe that if we all do a little bit, our waterways will be hugely improved for all of us.”

IKEA Greenwich opened on the 7th February and is IKEA’s leading sustainable store in the UK, designed to have a positive impact on the environment and promote healthy and sustainable living.

The Good Ship IKEA is currently running during half-term at Deptford Creek. As well as opportunities to steer the boats, the Creekside Discovery Centre is offering a range of activities including a recycled plastics workshop and a chance to sign a plastics pledge.

Each of the Cathedral’s 24 entrance steps represented one hour – and the 33 children younger than five who die every hour – a whole class that never even made it to school, all for the lack of something as basic as clean water.

On the bags in the front row were the names of real children whose lives were tragically cut short by diarrhoeal diseases linked to dirty water and poor sanitation, some as young as 9-month-old Arena from Madagascar, and some just about to start school, like from 5-year-old Jennifer from Zambia.

Actor Dougray Scott joined WaterAid’s thought-provoking tribute, asking the British public to support the international charity’s ‘Water Effect’ appeal to help raise £1.5 million to get clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to more than 20 health centres around the world, helping give children the best start in life.

WaterAid Ambassador Dougray Scott, (Mission Impossible II, My Week with Marilyn, The Woman in White) said: “The sea of bags lining the steps of St Paul’s is a stark reminder of the sheer numbers of young children who won’t live long enough to make it to their first day at school because they lack something as basic as clean water. It’s a dreadful thought for any parent; and this tragic waste of life is entirely preventable.

“Through my work with WaterAid, I have seen the incredible difference clean water and decent toilets makes, particularly for children. Clean water close to home helps keep children healthy and in school, giving them the education they deserve so they can reach their potential. By supporting ‘The Water Effect’ appeal, we can all help build a brighter future for children around the world.”

One in nine people around the world lack access to clean water close to home, while one in three have no decent sanitation. Together, clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene transform people’s health and create a powerful ripple effect, enabling children to go to school and their parents to earn a better living. That’s the water effect.

Haja, 31, from Tombohuaun in the Sierra Leonean jungle, has lost two young children to diarrhoea caused by the dirty water the family drank from a natural spring. She said: “I realised after the death of my children that the water is not good to drink. I look to the future and hope that such things won’t happen again.”

WaterAid has worked in Haja’s village to bring clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene, and continues to work with the most marginalised communities in some of the poorest places in the world.

Marcus Missen, Director of Fundraising and Communications at WaterAid, said: “Every single day, around 800 children under the age of five die because they are denied access to clean water and decent toilets. Many more will miss school because they have to spend hours collecting water or are sick from drinking dirty water. But it doesn’t have to be this way. WaterAid is working towards a world where everyone everywhere has clean water and decent sanitation, and all of us can help make this a reality. Even small donations to our ‘Water Effect’ appeal could help make all the difference, helping to transform a child’s life.”

Children aged from five to 11 from Wyvil Primary School in London painted a sign to appear at the front of the steps at St Paul’s Cathedral. Joana, aged 9, a pupil from the school who came to see the installation, said: “I can’t understand why some children don’t have water. It’s not very fair – I want water for everyone!”

Sue Armitage, art teacher at Wyvil Primary School said: “The children at our school were shocked to learn just how many children their age have no clean water to drink; they’re eager to support WaterAid to help change the lives of others for the better.”

The promotional bus was unveiled in Westminster as part of a tour that takes in London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester and Bristol.

To mark the launch of the new film, the broadcaster also commissioned an exclusive study into the national conversation about Brexit, and obtained data from Twitter revealing just how much it has dominated our thoughts since the referendum.

Research reveals that Brits can’t avoid Brexit, as we have over 92 million conversations about it every 24 hours, while the term ‘Brexit’ is heard more than 507 million times a day in the UK.

New figures from Twitter show there have been 180 million tweets globally mentioning Brexit since the beginning of January 2016 – but only two thirds of those have come from the UK.

Last week, Taco Bell chimed in with a sound that London has been missing for over a year: Big Ben’s bells. As the famous clock is under scaffolding for reconstruction, Big Ben’s popular chimes have also been under wraps. Taco Bell seized the opportunity to surprise and delight Londoners with a sound of their own: its signature bell, digitised to recreate the Westminster chimes. The move marks the world’s leading Mexican-inspired restaurant’s entry into London, one of the brand’s most requested cities for entry.

The first London Taco Bell, located in the Hammersmith district, opens November 23, and is sure to have hundreds of fans lining up for blocks.“Restoring Big Ben’s bell with our bell was the perfect way to introduce ourselves to London in a way only Taco Bell can,” said Marisa Thalberg, Taco Bell Global Chief Brand Officer. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously and have been known to play a prank or two. We hope our unique twist on Big Ben’s chimes brought surprise and humour to Londoners; this was our little arrival gift as we gratefully show up on London’s doorstep.”

Fans of Taco Bell will remember its infamous 1996 April Fool’s Liberty Bell prank, in which the brand advertised it had bought the Liberty Bell and renamed it the “Taco Liberty Bell,” before revealing the story was a hoax and announcing a contribution to the upkeep of the Liberty Bell. In this same lighthearted vein, Taco Bell brought some humour into Londoners daily commutes, as they passed by Big Ben and heard a new twist on the Westminster Chimes.

To create this new take on the chimes, the brand worked with an audio engineer to compose the chimes out of Taco Bell’s iconic bell. The chimes were blasted through parametric speakers in the area surrounding Big Ben on November 19, causing quite the stir among Londoners days before Taco Bell’s first London restaurant opening.

“We’ve had our sights set on London for quite some time, and as we continue growing internationally, we’re excited to bring Taco Bell to one of the world’s largest cities – and one of our most-requested markets,” said Liz Williams, President, Taco Bell International. “We’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response to our U.K. restaurants, and have ambitious plans for growth in London and the broader U.K., targeting more than 30 U.K. restaurants by the end of the year.”

The London restaurants will feature modern designs, open-kitchen concepts, artwork from local artists, complimentary WiFi and outlets for charging devices, inviting guests to stay and socialise over their meal. Menu items will include classics from Taco Bell’s U.S. menu, U.K. specific items such as churros with dipping sauces, Twisted Freezes, beer, and specials such as happy hours, ‘Taco Tuesday’ and a ‘Cravers’ value menu. The Hammersmith restaurant will even feature the same beer innovation as Taco Bell’s Las Vegas flagship Cantina, where beer fills the cup from the bottom before being sealed with a magnet.

Designed in collaboration with London artist Jess Wilson, the heads have been placed with local businesses in the neighbourhood to surprise and delight beer lovers. The first 200 people to spot a Goose head, snap a photo, tag @GooseShoreditch on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, and show it to a member of staff at the Brewpub will enjoy a free brew.

Inspired by its much beloved sister Brewpub in Chicago, the Shoreditch Brewpub will be a welcome addition to the east London high street, as it brings home to the UK previously unavailable Goose Island brews like Brut IPA and Fog Bowl, alongside its highly sought after Bourbon County Stout, award-winning range and local collaboration beers. Also available will be a Chicago-inspired menu featuring a truly unique pizza selection, subs and classic American favourites like wings and pretzel bites with beer cheese sauce to match.

Not satisfied by just serving great beer, Goose Island will also mark the Shoreditch Brewpub’s grand opening with live music and free pizzas throughout the night. Ongoing programming at the Brewpub will include both indie and headliner live acoustic and DJ acts, one off microbrews, tap takeovers, and brewery tours.

Heading up the Brewpub will be Goose Island’s very own Siebel Institute certified UK Brewmaster Andrew Walton, who returns to London following a month long immersion in Chicago where he learned all the Goose tricks of the trade. Responsible for the creation of microbrews made on site, Walton will also be the first in Europe to manage the Rack AeriAle system, an innovative nitrogen draft-dispensing system that connects barrel-aged beers directly to the pub’s tap system without the risk of oxidization.

Andrew Walton, Brewmaster, Goose Island Beer Co., said: “I cannot wait for the doors of the Shoreditch Brewpub to open and am so stoked for Goose Island fans and fans-to-be to see what we have in store. I’ve been working on some crazy delicious microbrews that’ll be available exclusively at our Shoreditch Brewpub. I know London has always held a special place in Goose Island’s history, and I can’t wait for us to make our mark on British beer culture, creating a new experience in the heart of east London, where foodies, beer drinkers and music lovers alike can join together in appreciation of a good time – and great beer.”

Land Rover has started its countdown to the world premiere of the new Range Rover Evoque with a fleet of wire form sculptures inspired by the new model. The full-scale artworks stopped pedestrians in their tracks at locations across London.

Land Rover pioneered the luxury compact SUV sector with the original Range Rover Evoque in 2010, with the next generation of the award-winning model promising to make a similar impact, introducing new standards of design, capability and sustainability.

The brightly-coloured installations were produced by the same Land Rover Design team responsible for shaping the new Evoque and embody the reductive design philosophy that has informed its elegant proportions. Blending simple lines with modernity, the 1:1 scale wire forms showcase the distinctive fast roofline and rising waistline that define new Evoque’s coupe-like silhouette.

Four of the eye-catching sculptures were parked at exclusive addresses around Kensington and Chelsea, finished in distinctive shades of copper, red and blue.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Design Officer, commented: “The wire forms have been created to preview the new Evoque – which is the embodiment of Range Rover’s modernist design approach. Where better to put these bespoke installations on display than in the heart of London – one of the greatest cities in the world.”

The ‘bus-in-a-box’ experiential stunt was used as the launch pad for First Bus Scotland to announce the arrival of 75 new buses into the city.

The activation was designed, delivered and managed by creative brand and strategy agency MadeBrave, which was appointed in July as First Bus Scotland’s sole creative agency. The eye-catching, interactive ‘bus-in-a-box’ display aims to help the city’s largest bus operator engage with customers and get them on board the new buses, which include free WiFi and USB charging points.

The 16-foot structure was the focal point of a customer awareness day and the first stop for a far-reaching integrated creative marketing programme that runs for the next three months with the aim of changing people’s perception of bus travel in the city.

This latest activity follows the “kids go free” campaign that ran over the summer, with MadeBrave developing a creative campaign to promote the free travel initiative.

Andrew Jarvis, Managing Director for First Scotland, says: “MadeBrave has created an eye-catching campaign that will allow us to communicate to customers the significant investment that we’re making to bus services in Glasgow, and ultimately help us to attract more people on board our services.”

Andrew Dobbie, founder of MadeBrave, adds: “First Bus Scotland appointed MadeBrave to drive a change in customer behaviour and help the business shift its focus more on to the customer, through its creative communications. The bus-in-a-box initiative was designed to enable First Bus Scotland to have some fun with its customers and present the humble bus as a more playful ‘toy’, just like the ones we all had when we were kids.”

The second phase of the multichannel campaign sees a creative programme of activity delivered across outdoor, radio, print, digital and social channels, as well as on and in buses across First Bus Scotland’s fleet.

MadeBrave is an award-winning agency based in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. It works with UK national and international brands across several sectors, including the BBC, Hard Rock Hotels, Naked Grouse, Jacobs Engineering, Vango and Distell. MadeBrave acquired content production agency Campfire in July 2018, creating the BornOriginal Group to further enhance its client service offering and help drive group turnover to a projected £2.3m for 2018.
