National BBQ Week is one of the UK’s leading awareness weeks, at the forefront of promoting and growing the BBQ market to an astounding 132 million BBQ occasions creating a market worth £1.6billion last year.

Normally the campaign is backed by leading grocery brands but this year, as the experiential element didn’t fit with Lockdown & social-distancing, the Week is, instead of encouraging, supporting and raising funds for the NHS & Frontline staff, as well as saluting the unsung heroes working so hard in shops and supermarkets for all our benefit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Launching on the Spring Bank Holiday, National BBQ Week will run until 31st May, starting with BARBI for BRITAIN on Monday 25th May 2020.

The National BBQ Week team is encouraging families, couples and housemates across the country to BARBI for BRITAIN by involving the whole household and hosting a BBQ from their garden, and then asking them to simply video or photograph the event, and share to National BBQ Week’s social media channels using #barbiforbritain and hopefully donating to the charities as well!

The Grill Master Brian George, BBQ Guru at National BBQ Week said:

“This year we are running the campaign to focus on thanking those who are doing everything they can to make sure we are all looked after. Our focus is on keeping people safe whilst they have fun and help others.”

“We want the nation to come together for a great day saluting the supermarket & corner shop workers, as well as those in hospitals, care homes and on the frontline.”

“Throughout the week, we’ll be driving #BarbiforBritain to make it the biggest shared BBQ event ever, encouraging us all to donate to www.nhstogether.co.uk.”

At the same time, the world’s biggest BBQ competition show will air on TV for the first time ever. To bring even more sizzle and help the nation get fired up in lockdown the 24th National BBQ Week (25-31 May) has partnered with BLAZE® TV to raise the steaks with the exclusive UK premiere of the hugely popular cooking competition series FIRE MASTERS: BBQ WARS.

BBQ RoadShows

This year the campaign includes two exciting experiential BBQ RoadShows, The London Foodie Festival at Syon Park, 25th – 27th May and the Royal Bath and West Show, 29th May – 1st June where a further 200,000 people will be exposed to the campaign and its supporting BBQ sponsors.

BBQ Brands

The 23rd National BBQ Week is supported by these leading brands:

Major Media Competitions

One of the UK’s biggest competition campaigns reaching around 50 million consumers will be run through media, and on social media channels including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook with big BBQ prizes.

2019 also sees the return of the highly popular BBQ Baptas. Social media followers of the campaign will be sending in videos of their fun Barbi’s or premium grilling technique / results, with the aim of winning a coveted BBQ Bapta Award and a big money prize as well as BarbiBoxes, full of sponsors goodies for runners-up.

This year as part of the campaign, a new retailers BBQ Guide has been launched and is being circulated to large, medium and independent retailers, farm shops, food outlets and restaurants who are all being encouraged to bang the National BBQ Week drum as loud as possible to drive sales and increase footfall. Anyone who would like a copy, can contact Antonia.b@nationalbbqweek.co.uk

Along with the UK’s leading BBQ Website www.nationalbbqweek.co,uk full of hints, tips, recipes and guides to ‘Being a Better BBQ’er’, there is also a Barbi Blog.

Brian George, Chief GrillMaster and Founder of National BBQ Week, said: “It’s really great we’re once again able to promote Better BBQ’ing and Gastro-grilling and to be able to celebrate our 23rd year by working with such great and hi-profile brands. We’re also delighted to be able to bring the National BBQ RoadShow to two of the leading food events in the UK in two of the most beautiful parts of the country.”

The organisers say that National Barbecue Week is one of the UK’s top awareness weeks and has, since its launch in 1997, been a “catalyst for growth in the BBQ market” according to PR Week and also being “fundamental in changing consumer attitudes to BBQ” according to Mintel and The Grocer.

Launching on Spring Bank Holiday and running from 28th May until the 3rd of June, the awareness week will be incorporating a dynamic digital, PR and media focus set to reach over 25 million people. There will also be experiential sampling at the launch of London’s ‘Summer by the River’ festival from the 1st to the 3rd June, where a further 150,000 people will be exposed to the campaign.

Key sponsors for this year’s campaign are: Official Alcohol-Free Beer: Budweiser Prohibition Brew; Official Snack: Walkers Max Strong; Official Sauce: Branston; Official Cheese: Primula; and Official BBQ Restaurant: Bodean’s.

Competitions will be run through media and through social media channels including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook including the return of the BBQ Baptas. Consumers will be encouraged to send in videos of their fun barbecue or grilling technique and results, with the aim of winning a BBQ Bapta Award, a cash prize and a BarbiBox, full of product from the sponsors.

Along with the UK’s leading BBQ Website full of hints, tips, recipes and guides to ‘Being a Better BBQ’er’, there is also a Barbi Blog, with messages from the sponsors and chief GrillMaster, Brian George, founder of National BBQ Week.

George, who runs agency Grocery Gurus, says: “National BBQ Week is one of the UK’s biggest awareness weeks and has helped change consumer BBQ attitudes and usage from just 9 million in 1997 to over 130 million last year with the overall BBQ food and drink market being worth around £1.3 billion, up from just £150 million back in 1997.”

Grocery Gurus will also be organizing other multi-brand campaigns including WorldBeerathoN in October (to coincide with Octoberfest), Get Wine Wise in November, Mixorama (for at-home cocktails) in December, and National Wine Week, from 26th November to 2nd December.
